30 Aspects Of License Restoration

Eligibility & Readiness

  1. Most people don’t realize that sobriety during probation doesn’t always count.
  2. You may feel ready to drive, but the State may not agree.
  3. Just being off probation doesn’t mean you’re eligible.
  4. The Secretary of State doesn’t care how long you’ve been waiting — just how well you’ve prepared.
  5. Even old mistakes can affect your evaluation if not addressed properly.
  6. It’s not about whether you deserve a license — it’s about whether you can prove it.

Documentation & Paperwork

  1. You only have 90 days after your evaluation to submit everything — miss it, and you start over.
  2. Submitting a 10-panel drug test instead of a 12-panel? Denial.
  3. Not all counselors are accepted for substance abuse evaluations — choose wisely.
  4. You can be denied just for checking the wrong box.
  5. Every single document must match — dates, sobriety claims, names.
  6. You don’t need to be perfect — but you need to be consistent.
  7. Saying “I’ve changed” is not persuasive — proof is.
  8. The State doesn’t care what you meant to say — they care what’s in writing.

Substance Abuse, Drug Testing & Medical Issues

  1. There’s a difference between being sober and being provably sober.
  2. If you’re on medication, the State might assume you’re impaired unless you prove otherwise.
  3. Using marijuana with a card still creates complications — especially if driving is involved.
  4. The State looks for more than just time — they want transformation.

Sobriety Programs, AA & Recovery Evidence

  1. AA isn’t required — but it sure helps when it’s done right.
  2. If you’re working the 12 Steps, you should be able to talk about them — comfortably.
  3. Knowing the Serenity Prayer and 12 Steps can actually help your case.
  4. Some people with years of sobriety still need documentation — not just a story.

Support Letters & Testimonials

  1. Support letters can make or break your case — most people get them wrong.
  2. Most people don’t know what their friends/family shouldn’t say in a letter.
  3. Sober witnesses matter — not just people who “support you.”
  4. A weak letter is worse than no letter at all.

The Hearing

  1. Many clients lose simply because they weren’t prepared for the hearing questions.
  2. The hearing officer can deny your case for inconsistencies you didn’t even notice.
  3. There are no second chances at the hearing — one bad day can delay your license for a year.
  4. Practicing your answers makes a bigger difference than you’d think.
